In his “Faces” series, Jan Bauer turns his attention to the human face and explores the effects of fragmentation, decay, and the passage of time. The works depict various stages ranging from nearly intact to severely damaged faces, raising the question of at what point a face can still be recognized as such. The focus is particularly on the emotional response to damaged or disfigured faces.
Cracks, breaks, and missing parts are not seen as flaws, but as an aesthetic of transience in their own right. This creates a dialogue between past and present, in which the fragment opens up new perspectives. The title “Faces” also refers to the direct encounter between the work and the viewer.
