“Everyone needs a window,” Isa Genzken once said. This statement serves as the starting point for the exhibition Ich geh lieber nicht nach Haus. Here, the window appears as an opening to the world and as a threshold between the interior and the exterior. Taking Genzken’s work as its starting point, the exhibition brings together historical and contemporary works that explore space, perception, and the conditions of reality.

The exhibition opens a new art-historical dialogue between Isa Genzken and Paul Cézanne. Both share a fundamental interest in the conditions of seeing and the construction of space. Cézanne liberated painting from the fixed perspectival pictorial space and developed a pictorial structure in which space emerges from the relationships between fields of color. Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart carried this exploration forward in constructive abstraction, using geometric forms to create space through structure and rhythm.

Isa Genzken transposes these questions into real space. Her window works combine image, object, and architecture, revealing that perception is always framed. Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili and Clémentine Adou build on these questions: While Alexi-Meskhishvili transforms photographs into spatial objects, Adou uses modified packaging from televisions and computers to highlight the material foundations of digital imagery. The exhibition explores how images and spaces shape our perception of reality.
